Is anybody in South Africa working today? Except me, that is? My guess is some of our artists are happily toiling away at their labour of love. People like Kronk and the members of the love and hate studio, for example.

Kronk

25 year old Kris Hewitt a.k.a “KRONK” describes himself thus on his MySpace page: “I do some graphic art & illustrations and I think that trout are awesome and clowns scare me but I find their masked personas oddly appealing. […] I like weak instant coffee and foamy latte and one day I want to be a real boy.” His has recently earned global recognition as a world class “toy artist” through collaboration with the international toy company, KIDROBOT.

Love and hate studio

love and hate studio is a fashion label and illustration company founded in 2004 by the young and enterprising and ultra-creative trio consisting of black koki , 351073 and elbowgrease. They have organized and participated in numerous art exhibitions in Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg, and Pretoria. They have also published a limited edition art book with local artists, their work has been featured in a host of South African magazines and they’ve been stocking various lifestyle fashion and street stores with their gorgeous and highly original handmade functional art pieces, jewelry and clothing.

It’s the day of the launch and everything’s running unnervingly smoothly. Shopfitting’s done, artists confirmed and the drinks are on ice.

Even the list of collaborators for this evening reads like a who’s who in SA’s new school of cool:

DJs Soosh, C-live, Georgeous The Beatbox and the gorgeous DJ Zinhle as well as ultra-hip Sweat X will making the music and setting the mood. Richard de Jager, Lisa Jaffe, Petro Steyn, Sibu, Katherine Mortner and Luke Radloff are our fabulous fashion people. And the art and photos of Stefan Naudé, Marcii Goose, Coenie Sutton, Joh Del, Love and Hate Studio, Kronk, Liam Lynch, Warren van Rensburg, Chris Saunders, Ross Garrett, Sabelo Mhlangeni and Xandre Kriel are guaranteed to stir up thoughts a and feelings even the most passive observer.

Yip. There’s not a glitch in sight and I don’t like it. A bit of power-shedding would be very comforting right about now; better the devil you know and all that. But as we’ve got a generator on standby even that won’t be too much of a mission.
