THE FRESHNESS FRANKENSTEIN

Vinti Andrews, graduate of London’s Central Saint Martins School of Fashion and Design, is fast becoming famous for her crazy reconstructionist techniques, earning a reputation as the Dr Frankenstein of street style.

Her first dabbling with Nike design resulted in a thoroughly unique tote bag (even incorporating a racoon tail) and a reconstructed Windrunner sure to make Geoff Hollister (designer of the original Windrunner) proud.

In collaboration with the Nike ID Studio in London she ventured further down the creative path with another surgical wonder: creating two life size pit bull dogs out of Nike shoes - one out of various colourful Air Max 90s, the other one out of Dunks.

LUKE RADLOFF & THE HAIRDRESSES

Luke Radloff made an auspicious entry into the world of high fashion by winning the award for Best Graduating Range at the London International School of Fashion, where he completed his studies in 2006. This promising start has so far proven to be quite prophetic.

He has since produced prodigiously for the Black Coffee label, was selected for the Elle New Talent Competition at SA Fashion Week (2007) and featured as the subject of numerous magazine editorials.

Luke’s creations never fail to surprise as he flirts with the many faces of fashion - from geometrically futuristic to airy Mediterranean and even an eerie fusion of Victorian frills with primeval powers.

He also indulges his creativity with the fabrics and other materials from which his creations are made, as attested to by what he did with (synthetic!) hair for the Nike BE TRUE Exhibition.

PETRO STEYN & THE MATERIALIZATION OF MAKE-BELIEVE

During her, as yet, short career in fashion, Petro Steyn has had first hand exposure to almost every aspect of the fashion industry – from pattern cutter to costume designer to lecturer.

This broad experience base is attested to by her unmistakable technical expertise which allows her to give physical form to the wondrous creatures inhabiting her imagination. She likes to “live in a world where I can create my own reality; a world of make-believe made real.” And she readily admits to “giving in completely to my imagination and the impossible.”

This approach seems to work as her signature fantasy creatures, mutants and hybrids and her innovative use of materials such as neoprene and paper are earning her a reputation as a uniquely talented and creative designer. Click here to see the flickr gallery of her work.

THE MTV DOCS

They came from far and near, the glitzy, the glam and their glorious gear. They came for inspiration, relaxation and a bit of lubrication for the imagination. They did not leave disappointed.

RICHARD DE JAGER AND THE WARHOL WORMHOLE

The mind of Richard de Jager is a busy place, housing a spectacular array of disparate concepts, all somehow harmoniously connected through a feat of creative engineering.

richard.jpg

Five minutes of conversation yielded enough information for at least a two page article which, for the sake of the present format, will have to be reduced to a few meaningful phrases and hopefully well chosen words.

Ask him about his inspiration and sources as diverse as ‘the hideousness of domestic craft culture’, ‘Marty MacFly’s auto lace-up Nikes in Back to the Future II’ and ‘the social strata and associated streetwear of the industrial revolution’ are cited.

Ask him about his upcoming projects and it all gets a decidedly Warhol-like glow as there is hardly a creative field where Richard de Jager is not willing (and apparently able) to venture: television, film and stage all get a mention, as does evocative images such as ‘Rys, Vleis en Aartappels’, the Karoo and ‘Virgin Suicides’. First up, at the end of the month, is a collaboration with his old school friend and owner of Mungo & Jemima, entitled ‘The Sun Always Shines on TV’, which will involve not only a choir performance, but also a musical performance by the man himself!

My guess would be that we’re talking more than 15 minutes of fame here…

CHRIS & THE UNCOOL COOL

Chris Saunders is a Johannesburg based photographer, working primarily in the fashion, portrait & advertising spheres.

While he does express frustration at having to curb his creativity in order to tow the creative industry line, this work allows his to pursue a (self funded) fine art career which has escalated in the past 3 years. He is also involved in a creative collective, team uncool, which creates new and experimental projects with mixed media. Very cool, in an uncool sort of way. Or vice versa. You know what I mean. Take a look at what he did for the Nike BE TRUE Exhibition at the Gallery on 4th.
