MOME HITS THE HEADLINES!

Frequent visitors to Gallery on 4th would have felt the warm buzz of recognition if they happened to read The Sunday Times on Sunday, 18 January. Featured on the cover of its Lifestyle supplement was our very own Mome Nale, pictured inside the gallery, as an archetypical member of what they call ‘the AmaKip-Kip Generation”.

The accompanying article by Bongani Madondo painted a bright picture of the freshest trends in Mzansi youth culture, bravely – and surprisingly successfully - trying to define what the evolving street culture is all about. What a pleasure to see AmaKip-Kip and the Smarteez being given a tentative place in our cultural story, from the struggle days to the Kwaito age, to the present day.

GAZELLE’S CHIC AFRIQUE

Gazelle was founded by photographer/artist/stylist/ex-reggae singer Xander Ferreira in 2006. Since then the group has had a lot of fun and won a lot of fans while doggedly pushing Afro futurism and pursuing the perfection of an authentic Afrikan Elektronik Dance Musik sound.

This pursuit has reached a splendid high with the imminent launch of Gazelle’s first album, Chic Afrique, at The Assembly in Cape Town on 30 January 2009. And if the album’s graphics, pictured above, has an eerily familiar look to it: Xander did some styling for the Spoek Mathambo + Shawn Mortensen AM90 Sound project.

THE FRESHNESS FRANKENSTEIN

Vinti Andrews, graduate of London’s Central Saint Martins School of Fashion and Design, is fast becoming famous for her crazy reconstructionist techniques, earning a reputation as the Dr Frankenstein of street style.

Her first dabbling with Nike design resulted in a thoroughly unique tote bag (even incorporating a racoon tail) and a reconstructed Windrunner sure to make Geoff Hollister (designer of the original Windrunner) proud.

In collaboration with the Nike ID Studio in London she ventured further down the creative path with another surgical wonder: creating two life size pit bull dogs out of Nike shoes - one out of various colourful Air Max 90s, the other one out of Dunks.
